Step 5: Group Projects: Writing Stage
Target Objectives
- Students write productive first draft compositions; goals include incorporating
ideas from their prewriting activity, organizing their information, and incorporating
new vocabulary.
Student Activities
- Students begin writing their final projects
Electronic Resources
- Word processing software. (e.g., Appleworks)
- Computer drawing software (e.g., KidPix Deluxe)
- Process writing sites designed to guide children through the approach. These
include:
- The
Writing Process. Students will find guidelines for writing, from a
web-based ESL curriculum unit called "Let's Explore San Diego", by Linda
Hall and Luz Chung.
- Young Authors' Workshop.
This site contains writing tips and resources for students (grades 4 through
7) organized by category: Ideas, Writing, Revising, Editing, and Publishing.
Assessment
- Use Rubric 5
- Save students' first draft compositions in their portfolios.
Impact of Technology: In what ways (if any) will technology enhance students'
learning experiences in these activities?
- Students will gain practice in using open-ended writing and art tools such
as KidPix Deluxe and Appleworks.
- Students can save their draft compositions on disks and add them to their
electronic portfolios. When students start revising, they will be able to
easily refer back to these drafts and reflect on their progress.
- Students will learn to use web sites that offer tips and suggestions for
young writers.
